Endodontic Retreatment

What Is Endodontic Retreatment?

Endodontic retreatment is a specialized procedure performed when a tooth that has previously undergone root canal therapy does not heal as expected or develops new issues. Over time, factors such as hidden canals, new decay, cracks, or changes in the surrounding bone can cause persistent infection or discomfort. Retreatment addresses these issues while aiming to preserve your natural tooth.

During the procedure, the original filling material is carefully removed, the canals are thoroughly cleaned and disinfected, and the tooth is resealed. This process allows our team to target remaining infection and restore the tooth’s health and function.

Why Choose Endodontic Retreatment?

Preserving your natural tooth is always our first priority. Endodontic retreatment offers several advantages over extraction and replacement:

  • Maintains proper bite function and natural tooth structure
  • Prevents bone loss in the jaw
  • Avoids more extensive procedures, such as implants or bridges
  • Often more cost-effective and less invasive than extraction and replacement

With advanced techniques and a high success rate, retreatment can save a tooth that might otherwise be lost.

What to Expect During Your Retreatment

Your retreatment begins with a thorough evaluation, including digital imaging to assess the previous treatment and the current condition of the tooth. Local anesthesia ensures your comfort throughout the procedure.

The process involves carefully removing the old root canal filling, addressing any remaining infection, and reshaping and disinfecting the canals. Once the canals are fully treated, the tooth is resealed, and a permanent restoration, such as a crown, is typically placed to protect the tooth and restore full function.

Most retreatments can be completed in one or two visits, depending on the complexity of the case.
