Root Canal Therapy

What Is Root Canal Treatment?

Root canal therapy is a specialized dental procedure designed to remove infected or damaged tissue from inside a tooth. When the inner pulp becomes inflamed or infected due to deep decay, cracks, or dental trauma, it can cause significant discomfort and may lead to serious infection if left untreated. Endodontic care addresses the source of the problem while preserving your natural tooth.

During treatment, the infected tissue is carefully removed, the root canals are thoroughly cleaned and disinfected, and the tooth is sealed to prevent future infection. Thanks to modern techniques and advanced anesthesia, today’s root canal treatment is typically no more uncomfortable than receiving a routine dental filling.

Benefits of Root Canal Therapy

Root canal treatment offers many advantages over tooth extraction. By saving your natural tooth, you maintain proper chewing function and avoid the need for more extensive replacement procedures. Root canal therapy is also highly predictable, with success rates exceeding 95%, making it one of the most reliable procedures in dentistry.

Preserving your natural tooth helps maintain the alignment of surrounding teeth and supports jawbone health by reducing the risk of bone loss. In addition, root canal therapy is often more cost-effective than extraction followed by dental implants or bridgework.

What to Expect During Your Treatment

Your root canal treatment begins with a comprehensive evaluation and digital imaging to assess the extent of infection. Local anesthesia is used to ensure your comfort throughout the procedure, and many patients are surprised to learn that treatment itself is typically painless.

During the procedure, a small opening is made in the tooth to access and remove the infected pulp. The canals are then cleaned, shaped, and disinfected using specialized instruments before being sealed with a biocompatible material called gutta-percha.

Most root canal treatments can be completed in one to two visits, depending on the complexity of the case. After treatment, your general dentist will typically place a permanent restoration, such as a crown, to protect the tooth and restore full function.
